Cyclists all over the world are taking to using video cameras as they go about there rides. Be them mounted on their helmets or on the bicycle, the cameras prove to be invaluable as they show what life is like as a cyclist across the globe.
Below i’ve listed all the video camera cyclists that I know of and which country and region them are from if known, not all video camera cyclists upload to youtube, so this is only a list of known video camera cyclists who upload.
See video camera cyclists from Austraila, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States of America

I only rarely watch these videos, because it stresses me out and it puts me off cycling.
Not everyone posts the scary stuff. Some post very little and some post just them having some fun.
The “scary stuff” is often linked in with the stopSMIDSY campaign tbh, or for reporting purposes to improve the negative parts. Just remember, you’re only seeing a letter-box view of cycling and that the positives far outweigh the negatives.
I have posted a number of cycling vids and reside in that list. 🙂 Most of my stuff is not close driving or idiots but hopefully fun or interesting stuff I take part in.
Thanks for your comment. You encouraged me to make a positive video giving a little taste of summer riding along the coast here in Perth, Western Australia. I thought it might cheer up all you Poms given it is winter time 🙂 You can find it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiPm6-KGZ6o.
Regards
Andrew
would love to see a list that shows where each cyclist comes from, the only ones that mainly interest me are london camera cyclists and surrounding areas
I’ll look at adding locations, like i said on twitter, might take me a while!
You forgot me, your latest find – rugfoot. You might want to include my “Between and Porsche and a Ferrari” in your next top 10 ; ) Great work there Gaz. I will check out some of my fellow headcammers!
Gaz, theres also a number of racing guys on youtube using helmet cams. Brunelle “the tosser” aside, there are a few legit races published up there. A good example is Chavez:
http://www.youtube.com/user/chavezcycling
Cyclocross has used helmet cams for years too. Theres something for everyone who likes cycling.
I’m aware of chavez, for some reason i missed him even though i’m subbed. I love the high octane action of a race 😀
I admire Burnelle for what he does. I’m looking forward to Line of Sight
Should be able to add me to the list soon Gaz – I’m getting a Veho Muvi. But thanks for this list – incredibly useful!
Hopefully you don’t catch anything extreme on it. Looking forward to your uploads.
me too, the more the better
Dont forget to use the camera to promote as well as defend.
🙂
We in the Bristol Traffic project wish to deny any potentially libellous accusations that our reporters ride bicycles. If you were to visit our main site, you would see that it consists mainly of still photographs, reporting on what motorists are forced to do in a car-unfriendly city like Bristol, which is yet to hear that the war on motorists is over. The council still has features like yellow lines, traffic lights, zebra crossings and no entry signs, all of which should be removed, while petrol tax should not just be reduced, it should be subsidised by the state the way it is in Iran and China.
Rhode Long and Analogue Andy are also contributors to our site, as is “quercus”. If you find evidence that any of these people have been cycling, please report it and they shall be made to watch Top Gear until they come to their senses.
Thank you for your co-operation.
Are you asking me to remove the link to the bristol traffic youtube channel?
As far as i’m concerned, the war on the motorists has barely started, we should be sending in more troops (aka the traffic police)
Perhaps you would like to read my blog post about how the roads are un-policed?
Thanks for listing me. If I still lived in the UK, I’m sure that by now I’d also be filling youtube with videos of the regular battles that occurred on my my commute. I’d also now be using a camera “to record evidence of drivers behaving badly”. However, that’s really not what you’ll see in the videos that I actually upload to youtube.
It’s not due to being selective that I don’t “record evidence” these days, but because the opportunity simply doesn’t arise. Roads here are designed to keep drivers in order, and of course generally as a cyclist I’m well away from cars. That’s pretty much why we emigrated, of course.
I’m not aware of anyone in the Netherlands recording regular incidents for youtube. Anyone who tried would have a hard time making an interesting youtube channel out of it.
There is a reason why the people making these regular recordings come from the UK, USA, Canada and similar countries. That’s “where the action is”. i.e. where the few remaining cyclists have little choice but to “share” badly designed roads with bad drivers.
I like the fact that you post videos that are very much different to what most others post. I find it interesting looking at the stuff you get to have a go on and the routes you get to use. And I am of course very jealous of the road systems you get to use.
I have found over the past year and a bit where I have used my camera to evaluate my own riding, I have gradually improved in the traffic and now I am much more aware of potential conflicts before they happen.
I’ve come to the conclusion that it is partly down to the cyclist and how they think and partly down to other road users and how they behave.
I’ve only really had problems with SMIDY’s this year, so hopefully it’s getting better over here *fingers crossed*
Hello David!
What I find most amusing about the Brit and Yank videos is how theres a concerted effort to distract from the real issues, even abuse and threaten cyclists who post evidence. It sometimes makes you wonder if theres an organised effort to dissuade cycling from one’s mind and considered options.
The Netherland (and a couple of German) videos I really love. They show a completely different attitude, a hightened awareness of cyclists, even a workable legal system.
The UK media here also has to do a hell of a lot to catch up. It seems that to justify talking about cycling issues they HAVE to mention RLJ, or any other illegal cycling (which is still rare, something I know to be true as I’ve done the counting at certain places in my home town). They also feel they have to include some fat bloater to rant and rant until he explodes like Mr Creosote.
🙂
So in the media, the real issues are never fairly raised. I was even told in a BBC email when I complained about a week back over the usual abuse on their website that “it doesn’t matter” and that allowing people to post the usual crap is “a balanced opinion.”
Thanks for both your comments. Gaz’s point about improving ones own cycling has something going for it. I know from my time in the UK that I developed a bit of a second sense for what the next idiot was likely to do. Of course, protecting yourself in this way only goes so far. Fairly frequently you encounter a new type of idiocy which you’ve not seen before.
It really is another world here so far as cycling is concerned, and that’s got a lot to do with why there is no generalized hassle for cyclists.
So far as media treatment of cyclists is concerned, markenlei (another on your list) made this film about how incidents in which cyclists are “in collision with” motor vehicles get treated very differently by the media over here.
Sorry I meant to say thanks for adding me to the list before too. So thanks!
Also you might to add OxfordYT who is a cyclist in Queensland, Australia.
Regards
Andrew
And thanks for adding me too Gaz!
My headcam mission statement is to keep it short and curious. No anti-car agenda. Anything of interest goes up (with music).
Have to agree – there is a bit of a media anti-cyclist feeling here in the UK. But cyclists have to take some responsibility for that. If you RLJ, you’re gonna annoy people and we’ll never persuade anyone to improve things for London cyclists.
Can I go join your cyclecam list please?
Ah. Scrub that request please. Just saw I already am listed. Was looking for my blog name. 😉
Blimey! I didn’t know that there were so many of us posting youtube videos. As you say, I wonder how many video but don’t post. Must be a fair few!
I wonder if we’re like spiders: For everyone one of us you see, there are 50 more hiding somewhere 🙂 Two people at my work have bought and ride with cameras since seeing me with mine, but don’t post online, so that’s two right there.
I also know several that don’t post online.
Would be interested to know if any of those are in Brighton, as I’m thinking of getting a bike and would like to know how the decent cyclists find Brighton roads.
Have a look at http://www.bricycles.org.uk as it covers your area. If you want general bike advice (apart from obviously read the highway code section) then there are beginners section on good forums such as cyclechat and the ctc forum.
Theres basic commuter advice over at http://www.ctc.org.uk too.
Someone needs to put together a weekly warp-up of the best videos. There are simply far to many to watch, and far to many otherwise boring ones like RLJ’s when no one is around or talking on a mobile while stopped in traffic.
You could always do this 🙂
If this is done, you need to be careful about the wording used, you don’t want encourage people to get good footage to make it in there.
Perhaps something along the lines of ‘must watch’.
I may try doing something like this, although it would be time consuming.
Hi there, I live in Paris, and the behaviour of road users here is so shocking compared to London where I used to commute that I’m considering getting a cam and posting to youtube like you are all doing. My question is this: knowing the reputation that Parisians have, would it be ‘cheating’ as it is so easy to record so many gratuitous incidents of bad driving and cycle riding here?
It wouldn’t be cheating
I think that’s a great idea.. if I knew a bit more about what hazards to watch out for, I’d be inclined to take a trip to Paris and ride around on a Vélib
I only managed one cycling video online before my non waterproof cam ended up in my washing machine somehow. One of my boys must have put it in there. Plan to do some more once I get it replaced. Do I count?
Scrap what I said above. All my cycling activity will now be on my other youtube channel. My username is Lukeybloo.
GREAT list, thanks very much for keeping it updated!
Thanks for adding my name to the list. I hope this club starts getting less exclusive!
Just noticed you have sw19cam listed twice and 240 and 241 – Do I get a special prize for noticing your “deliberate” mistake 😉
When I get some spare time I’ll have to pop back on here and compare with my YouTube subs!
For any other commenters I’m SkrzypczykBass btw 🙂
Ta, No prize i’m afraid 😛
Should have added this to my last comment, I’ve started created a playlist on my Youtube channel for any clips that include other helmet cam riders I’ve seen! Still 2 un-ID’d riders – could possibly be someone on here! I’ll add any others I find them….
Might have to ‘steal’ that idea 🙂
Thank you for adding me. Knock on wood, so far the majority of my videos have been positive and/or interesting things that happen on my rides, even though I live in a metro area in the US. Only one aggressive motorist so far, the rest of the bad ones have been careless/inattentive. Hopefully it stays that way.
You can also add my YouTube account (www.youtube.com/xlnetwork). I’m from The Netherlands and I even know Twilwel and DavidHembrow personally.
Thanks for pointing that out, I don’t know how i missed you as i am subscribed to you :S
No problem… here are a few other names of people who are Dutch and regularly post something on YouTube; pjotr320, beekie1982, DerkvanL, harwig.
Hi,
I also commute with camera. I don’t upload videos on daily basis but do upload now and then:
http://www.youtube.com/user/Quemo304
I live in the Netherlands.
Added you and a few others I got from your channel, ta 🙂
I forgot to mention:
That’s not the hood of a car you see in the movies but the shell from my velomobile (faired monocoque tricycle recumbent)
I only have a couple of videos so far, but I will post anything I record. Youtube name: myforwik
Forget to say that I am from Australia.
Hi Gaz,
NoGo90 here…Im Canadian, Not Australian! (nothing against Australians mate)
I just started uploading videos and have sorted out my details now in the sidebar.
Thanks again!
Fixed 🙂
Awesome, an east coaster! Looking forward to the vids! (I’m in Vancouver)
New camera cyclist here any chance of being included in the list? YouTube: westaft i also have my own cycle blog at http://www.ibikedit.info and I’m from Stoke on Trent.
